about

"To The Brink" is set to be released on April 30th, 2013.

"Without trying to sound too artsy or whimsical, the thing that I'm most proud of regarding 'To The Brink' is that it's real. It's honest," explains Brown. "I think it's really easy to get in the studio and start changing something you wrote in the bathroom or in your kitchen in earnest, and start molding it into what you think people want to hear. Here's a sincere effort that you are proud of and want to share, but trying to dress it as something more accessible or relevant is what immediately strips it of what made it worth writing or listening to it in the first place".

That said, of the easily distinguishable and enjoyable aspects of "To The Brink", the arrangement and fullness of each track has to be noted. The album's more uptempo tracks such as "Please My God" and "What Goes Around" have a soulful energy that is hard to ignore. While Brown concedes that some of the lyrical themes ("sifting through the
incendiary love-end-game and other various mental blockages") aren't wholly original, the uniquely representative musical approach and intensity of such tracks easily sets them apart.

And yet, some of the more revealing and thoughtful moments on the album can be heard on tracks like "Tickets To Broadway" when Brown sings, "I've locked myself in this laundry room, and I'm sure you're gonna call and take it all back soon. Turning a phrase, a calculated line: to tumble down your cards and make you change your mind". It's with these slower, more introspective tracks that Brown showcases his vocal ability to emit the feeling of the song with such empathy it would be unnerving were it not for the soothing timber of his voice.

Overall, "To The Brink" is a dynamic, lush collection of great songs that stand alone but work even better together. It's certainly worthy of being added to your 'new music to download' list, when the full-length becomes available on April 30th. As explained by Brown, "I try to make records with the live-solo-coffee-house rawness and honesty with the full-band-large-venue edge. I'm very proud of "To The Brink" to that end, and I hope others enjoy it as well.
